This Controller Offers Smarter Pump Protection & Enhanced Performance

If you’re activating an irrigation pump from an irrigation controller, you’re going to need a pump start relay that receives the controller’s 24-volt signal and switches on the power to the pump.

A traditional relay can be a reliable choice, but its intelligence is limited to just turning the pump on and off. Occasionally, that can mean that it could turn on the pump when the pump is not able to do its job – this often leads to overheating and significant costly repairs.

Enter the Munro SmartBox. A great option for pump start and pump protection in one, the Munro SmartBox is a “smart” pump start relay because it incorporates sensors that measure the health of the pump when it’s switched on, preventing critical issues, protecting the pump, and ensuring a reliable long-life installation.

There are two common failures that can occur with a traditional relay – deadhead and run-dry. The SmartBox protects against both.

Deadhead

Deadhead occurs in an irrigation system when a pump is operating at normal case pressure, but the water isn’t flowing to the sprinklers. This can cause the pump case to become unusually hot, super-heating the water and leaving the pump and pipework subject to expansion or failure.

The SmartBox will detect an increase in temperature via the temp sensor, and react by turning off the pump, thereby protecting the system from damage.

Run-Dry

Run-dry occurs in an irrigation system when a pump is operating without water coming into the suction side. This can cause the pump to burn up seals and/or the motor, resulting in permanent damage and requiring pump replacement.

The SmartBox will detect a decrease in pressure within the pump case via the pressure sensor, and react by turning off the pump, thereby protecting the system from damage.
